Bengaluru: An assistant commissioner of police and assistant sub-inspector of police attached to North-East CEN police station were caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a complainant in a cybercrime case Tuesday night. The accused are ACP Tanveer SR and ASI Krishnamurthy.
In a press note, Lokayukta police said the duo asked for a bribe of Rs 4 lakh to carry out investigation in a cybercrime case and arrest the suspects. As an advance, they were receiving Rs 2 lakh when they were arrested.
A senior Lokayukta police officer said the managing director of a software firm dealing in artificial intelligence had filed a complaint against a former employee for defaming the company. The complaint was lodged with North-East CEN on Feb 26.
“The former employee was sacked for professional reasons. In a bid to take revenge, the employee hacked into the firm’s website and posted negative comments in the guise of customers. As a result, new customers hesitated to carry out business with the firm. Agreements with around eight new customers were withheld due to the issue,” an investigating officer said.
According to the MD, the loss ran into several lakhs of rupees. “But more than that, our goodwill was getting affected. If unattended, we would have faced a loss of crores of rupees. Therefore, I lodged a complaint. But police started demanding money to continue the investigation and arrest the suspect. Then I filed a complaint with Lokayukta police,” the MD told TOI.
According to Lokayukta, ASI Krishnamurthy was arrested while accepting Rs 2 lakh near the police station, and based on his statement, ACP Tanveer was later arrested from his Kaval Byrasandra residence.
