Usha Vance, the second lady of the United States of America recently gave her first-ever interview after becoming the second lady to The Free Press. In the interview, the 39-year-old Indian American wife of US Vice President J.D. Vance shared various details from the couple’s love story to her preferences in fashion. Here’s all you need to know.

Usha Vance is the wife of the American Vice President J.D. Vance. The couple who had been dating since college got married in 2014 and share three children now. After becoming the second lady of the states, Usha Vance has set various records such as being the first Hindu Second Lady and the first Indian American Second Lady. Many consider her to be the Vice President’s most trusted advisor in all matters of concern.

Ever since she came into the spotlight, Usha Vance has been liked or even loved by people for her bold acceptance of her beauty and how she never tries to fit a certain role or appearance. Usha Vance as a woman is the same as the Second Lady, though the responsibilities differ and she carries them accordingly.
Vance made her debut at the Republican convention in July 2024, where she adorned a $495 cobalt-blue Badgley Mischka dress with no jewellery or makeup. This was the first time the American public saw her in the limelight and was pleasantly shocked by her simplicity. Back then the WWD noted that she had not consulted with designers before adorning the garment.
She explained her take on the same in the interview, saying, “The day before J.D. was selected—I did not know he was going to be selected—I was working as a lawyer, and I had the wardrobe of a person with three children who likes to do things outdoors, who has a dog, who doesn’t like things to be too precious,” Usha told me. “And then, a switch flipped, and it’s not like it came with a whole new wardrobe and stylist and everything.”
In the interview, Journalist Peter Savodnik noted that the Second Lady adorned an ivory silk tie-neck blouse and dark, wide-leg pants, even though the photographer had wanted a top with more colour.

When asked about how it feels to be an Indian-American woman in the MAGA land where every other woman is blonde and has botox and facelifts, Vance laughed.“I’m laughing,” Usha said, “because it would be really hard for me to be blonde,” adding “that color would look totally absurd.”
She emphasized that her reception into the political sphere has been positive, adding that “For what it’s worth, my reception into this world—and I’m not from a particularly wealthy background, not from a very fashion-oriented background personally or professionally—has been really positive,” she reiterated. “People don’t seem to care all that much what I look like.”
She also shared this is why she personally wasn’t into dyeing her hair and preferred to let it go grey. Americans have actually been loving the Second Lady’s appearances, appreciating her simplicity and beauty.
“Ladies, in a world that is constantly telling women not to show any signs of aging, be an Usha instead of a Kardashian. As a middle-aged woman with my own greying hair, I love and admire her self-confidence and natural beauty. What a classy lady! We need more of this!” wrote an X user. “Yes! When I saw her let her gray grow out, I instantly liked her even more!” added another.
Usha Vance’s choice of her natural appearance, without conforming to a certain “type” of look that women should obtain is representative of her authenticity, which it seems the public is obviously loving!
